Spin classes under the planetarium's stars

A unique twist on “spinning,” the indoor cycling class, is being offered on a monthly basis by Image Cycling of Centerport at the Vanderbilt Planetarium.

Oversized movie-like images are projected on the planetarium’s walls and combined with inspiring music and special effects to create a compelling fitness experience.

John Hinrichsen, Image Cycling’s founder, introduced the concept in 2003 at his spin classes at a local gym and then approached the planetarium two years later.

“In an effort to take exercise to a whole new level,” he said, “I developed several theme shows during which participants are a part of the experience by riding along on spin bikes with the music, special effects and motivational coaching.”

Classes – or “rides” – are currently offered in nine different themes. For example, “Enter the Universe” is a simulated all-terrain ride through outer space that includes exploding stars and black holes. The soundtrack’s uplifting rhythms aim to help riders through the more challenging sections.

Hinrichsen said, “The ride also challenges participants to explore the true undiscovered frontier — each person’s inner potential.”

Upcoming rides are scheduled for 6:30 and 8 p.m. on June 25, and the theme will be “The Rockin’ Ride.”

“It is one of our most requested rides,” Hinrichsen said. “It is an upbeat and fun event with a party atmosphere. Riders are able to view and ride to larger-than-life imagery of classic rock artists, such as the Rolling Stones, the Doors and the Who, to name just a few.”

The planetarium is located at 180 Little Neck Rd in Centerport. The rides are appropriate for teens through adults of all fitness levels. Participants can ride at their own pace and set their own desired resistance level on the bike. No prior spin class or biking experience is needed.
Classes are $35 (a portion of the proceeds goes to the planetarium). To register, visit imagecycling.com or call 631-702-0950.
